2025 IEEE ICDM Outstanding Service Award: Dr. Charu Aggarwal
The IEEE ICDM Outstanding Service Award is the highest recognition for service achievements in Data Mining, and is given to one individual or one group who has made major service contributions that have promoted Data Mining as a field and ICDM as the world's premier research conference in Data Mining. The 2025 IEEE ICDM Outstanding Service Award goes to Dr. Charu Aggarwal.
Charu Aggarwal is a Distinguished Research Staff Member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. He has been a central figure in the data mining community for over two decades, exemplified by his role as Program Co-Chair of IEEE ICDM 2015. His long-term commitment is further demonstrated through his ongoing participation as a Program and Senior Program Committee member for ICDM, and his membership on the ICDM Steering Committee since 2015. Beyond ICDM, he has held various organizing roles for premier venues such as the IEEE Big Data Conference, the IEEE ICBK Conference, and the IEEE Transactions on Big Data. Dr. Aggarwal's dedicated service during the formative years of these conferences and journals has been instrumental in their growth and establishment.
His leadership extends deeply into the data mining communities of ACM and SIAM. He served as Program Co-Chair of ACM KDD 2016 and held key editorial positions as Editor-in-Chief of ACM SIGKDD Explorations (2014-2018) and co-Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data (2017-2024). Within SIAM, he has contributed as Vice-Chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Data Mining and as a member of the SIAM Industry Committee. In addition to these leadership roles, he has been a frequent organizer and senior program committee member for major conferences including the SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM) and ACM KDD.
Through this sustained and high-level service across IEEE, ACM, and SIAM, Dr. Aggarwal has significantly strengthened key conferences, journals, and research communities in data mining worldwide, establishing himself as a profoundly influential contributor to the field.
